This pocket zine chronologically selected presenting vintage travel ephemera of Hong Kong from 1930s to 1960s, from posters of lithographed harbour views and Peak sedan chair scenes to bird’s eye maps and photographic street of Central and Nathan Road, alongside small ephemera such as hotel luggage labels. These surfaces, large and small, reveal how designers used illustration, type and printed matter to shape Western impressions of Hong Kong and the Orient. Two vertical panels highlight the creator’s perspective on the zine topic through text discussing visual evolution and format.

This pocket zine chronologically presents selected US-produced films with “Hong Kong” in their titles from the 1940s to the 1960s, examining how poster graphics—character styling and roles, scene settings and poster subtitles—shaped Western cinematic impressions of Hong Kong. The sequence highlights recurring visual tropes and marketing strategies. Judith also summarizes key poster metadata (including poster sequence numbers and common sizes), offering a compact reference to help readers identify and understand vintage US movie posters.

About Judith Siu
Judith Siu is an art creator and phone photographer with a finely tuned visual sensibility developed through extensive experience in the arts and culture sectors. Her photography captures Hong Kong’s vibrant, fleeting moments, weaving personal and cultural narratives into small, intimate scenes. Beyond photography, Judith has extensive experience collecting and working with Western vintage paper prints. She studies how these images change over time and shape ways of seeing Hong Kong. Her Ways of Seeing zines grow from this interest: image-led publications that pair curated commentary with visual layouts to guide readers, through clear and approachable visual narratives, toward a renewed understanding of Hong Kong’s cultural memory and historical contexts.
