Islanders島民 Zine is a map-zine that enquires into islands, their people and lifestyles to develop original perspectives on sustainable living.
A Social design without designer
On Peng Chau island, the mysterious choreography of chairs in the outdoor public spaces tints the atmosphere with romanticism. This curious liveliness is an invitation to look beyond appearances: we shed light on this ordinary sitting device to explore its overlooked community-fostering properties. Take a seat and let us tell you this story.
The level zero of an edible city
Walk past the main street, a soft cloak covers the island with a verdant character. In this seemingly-homogenous setting, the shiny mature fruits attract our attention. You might come across them at the market or at a relative’s table. If you get lucky, an islander might even hand you a papaya; in that case, accept the gift, take a bite, and savour the taste of Peng Chau.
Ordinary place-makers
A walk in Peng Chau usually leads you to familiar faces, all casually dressed. You see the same shirts in front of the kindergarden, at a restaurant, at an intersection. And one day, all these people are gathered on the main square, all wearing the same t-shirts. Are you size M or XL? Put it on and see if you fit as an islander.
Economy that serves people
Still strolling around? Are you enjoying the slow pace of the island, or simply can’t find food because all restaurants are “closed for a few days”? Isn’t it surprising to find that so many businesses use such a vague expression? Let’s have a look at the other side of these “休息” (rest) signs and discuss what should be at the core of our economies.
