City Diary is an image driven zine series that presents a wordless visual diary through phone photography. The zine is produced using an origami T-shape cut-and-fold method: a single double-sided A4 sheet becomes a 16-page pocket zine. Each copy is studio-printed on 240 gsm paper (inkjet) and handmade.

In City Diary I, the photographer uses phone photography to record industrial building features, light and shadow, and walls marked by time to create a distinct visual language. By bringing to the fore façades, textures and subtle human traces, the sequence of images invites the viewer to slow down and attend to the city’s rhythms and cultural memory.

In City Diary II, the photographer turns to Hong Kong’s public housing estates, recording architectural forms, communal spaces, and the everyday lives that animate them. Images focus on building patterns, staircases, laundry, doorways and moments of domestic routine—capturing how human presence and domestic traces shape the estate’s textures and atmosphere. By focusing on these details, the sequence invites viewers to slow down and consider the rhythms of communal life and the layered memories embedded in everyday environments.

In City Diary III, the photographer focuses on the vantage of looking down along streets, crossings, parks and public spaces capturing how vertical perspective compresses everyday scenes into graphic compositions. Images emphasize human figures and vehicles become miniature markers of scale and activity that interplay with light and shadow. By privileging downward views and repeated motifs, the sequence invites viewers to reconsider perception, privacy and the city’s vertical rhythms.

About Judith Siu

Judith Siu is an art creator and phone photographer with a finely tuned visual sensibility developed through extensive experience in the arts and culture sectors. Her photography captures Hong Kong’s vibrant, fleeting moments, weaving personal and cultural narratives into small, intimate scenes. Beyond photography, Judith has extensive experience collecting and working with Western vintage paper prints. She studies how these images change over time and shape ways of seeing Hong Kong. Her Ways of Seeing zines grow from this interest: image-led publications that pair curated commentary with visual layouts to guide readers, through clear and approachable visual narratives, toward a renewed understanding of Hong Kong’s cultural memory and historical contexts.
