These paintings form a part of Shahana Rajani’s first presentation in Hong Kong, ‘In drawing, in remembrance’. The proceeds will support the displaced Indus Delta community.

Painting of a Shrine in the Indus Delta

A network of sacred shrines continues to survive on the islands of the Indus Delta where most human inhabitants have been forced to leave. These water shrines are centred around graves of saints known to protect the delta. These enduring shrines function as miraculous anchors that ground, sustain and guide fisherfolk in an increasingly endangered world. Community artists make paintings of the shrines, to help displaced families stay connected to their sacred homelands.

Painting of a Fish in the Indus Delta

Generations of residents in the Indus Delta sustained their families as fisherfolk, and they were stripped of their livelihood when they were displaced from the delta. In the streets and homes of their resettlement areas in Karachi, drawings of marine life abound, collectively recreating the rhythms of their former lives.
