How this bag came to be was simple really – we wanted to make something that was
community-for-community. That, coupled with the fact that we knew close to nothing about producing tote bags, led us to Pang Jai, the community who have historically fought and struggled and held their place as the generational contributors of fabric trade and craft in this city.
Pang Jai market has seen 40 years in Hong Kong, nestled right in the hustle of Sham Shui Po, home to 53 fabric sellers and seamstresses. Its presence is something of a hand-reared fort city, with activist banners hung across its outer walls beaming messages to the government, and within, a wonderland stacked to the brim with discontinued and special fabrics. The low, weighted ceilings and the narrow, full pathways make you feel as if you are an adventurer looking for treasure – and treasure here you will find.
